Good news!
Mom is out of the hospital, and at
Diane’s house to recover. We are thrilled! I talked to Mom on the
phone after she got to Diane’s house and she just chattered away about
the beautiful crocheted quilt Diane is making for me. Mom really
sounded wonderful!
It’s been a bumpy ride, though.
Mom’s surgery was 6 hours long! The surgeon took out the cancer,
kidney, adrenal gland, and a roll of lymph nodes. (He really agonized
over the lymph nodes – he said they didn’t want to come out but he just
kept at it – it took 45 minutes but he was determined!) The cancer was
also in the major artery that feeds the kidney, and they had to remove
part of that. Her incision is 11 ½” long. It starts just below the
sternum and continues in an arc down to just above her pelvic bone. The
incision looks great. It’s healing beautifully. She needs to cough the
“after surgery” junk up out of her lungs, but it’s very painful for her
to use those muscles. She began to sit up on her own yesterday, so that
will help to clear her lungs.
She lost a LOT of blood. The
Doctors tell us that the surgery went as expected up until the last part
just before closing when her blood pressure began to fall. They
couldn’t get it to come back up, so they gave her more and more blood
but it continued to fall. They didn’t know why her blood pressure was
still falling, but decided to give her even more blood and the blood
pressure finally stabilized. The Anesthesiologist told me they were
very afraid they were going loose her. I believe your prayers on Mom’s
behalf were answered with the Doctor’s decision to keep working on her
even after it seemed she would not make it. They tried something that
they didn’t really think would work, but thank God they tried it
anyway! Thank God for His healing hand and your prayers!
She had terrible side effects with
the anesthesia. She’s been coherent and incoherent off and on since the
surgery on Friday evening. She lost her short-term memory and on Monday
morning she was asked why she was in the hospital. She couldn’t
remember what brought her there and what the huge incision was from.
Can you imagine how terrifying that would be for mom? This morning she
is much more cognizant, so we are seeing tremendous, speedy
improvement. Thank God for the peace that passes our ability to
understand!
Mom has been blessed with such
good health that she hasn’t had to take anything stronger than aspirin
for the past 50 years. It should have been no surprise that the pain
meds they gave her right after surgery would be too strong for her. By
Saturday night, she lost her strength totally and couldn’t stand at all,
or even sit up in the bed. Her kidney worked like it was supposed to,
but her bladder stopped contracting like it should. She could not eat
or drink. After coming successfully out of the operation, her body
began to shut down (the surgeon’s words) from the side effects of the
pain drugs. Sunday morning they took her off the IV pain meds and put
her on an oral pain med that was much less damaging to her body. That
made a huge improvement fairly quickly. Wouldn’t that have been
horrible to successfully remove the cancer and end up loosing her to an
overdose of pain meds? Thank you so much for your prayers!!!
Mom’s face, hands, and arms
swelled up to about 4 times their normal size. Her skin turned
yellowish green. Yesterday we began to see significant improvement in
her coloring, and the swelling began to abate. All of the Doctors have
said that she had a “very BIG operation.” All four of them repeated
that every time they saw her. I think it’s totally remarkable that she
got out of surgery at 7:00 pm on Friday, and she was discharged on
Tuesday morning from such a “BIG” operation. I know that God has
answered our prayers and that she will continue to improve.
Mom will be at Diane’s house for
at least another week. Maybe more. Diane is totally set up to take
care of Mom with a large guest bedroom and her own private bathroom
right off the kitchen. Diane and her husband, Jeff, along with their 3
kids that still live at home will all chip in to help Mom regain her
strength and good health. If you’d like to send a card to Mom, please
send it to Diane’s address: Betty Ebaugh c/o Diane Sutton

Thank you so much for all of your
prayers. God is still on the throne, and He has shown us His mercy in
bringing mom back to good health. Please continue to pray for her.
She’s out of danger now, but still has a long way to go to get back to
being Betty! Your prayers and God’s mercy will get her back to better
health than she has had for quite a while.
